Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says anything less than a challenge for the Premierhsip next season will be deemed a failure.

Arsenal have finished well adrift of the league winners in the last 2 seasons, as injuries hampered their attempts to regain the Premiership crown.

There’s not much more I can say, so I’ll let the great man speak: ‘An acceptable season, first of all, for Arsenal Football Club is to fight for the championship.

‘Last year, at the end of October and beginning of November when we were 16 points off the leaders, that wasn’t an acceptable season. For us to be fighting in March, April and May is an acceptable season. If you win it or lose it by a point well OK that is something you can handle.

‘Last year we showed in spells – like in the Carling Cup – what we could do. But the Carling Cup is not a major trophy, it is an interesting way to study the potential of your side. The major trophies are the championship and the Champions League.

‘I work very hard to develop this team. We knew we were facing major competition in England with clubs who invest a lot of money.

‘We knew we wanted to go a different way and be a little bit patient. But, while we have a young team, it is not a team without experience. For example Fabregas who is 20 but has 100 games in the Premiership.

‘We have a great hunger for success. I believe we have the quality and we must show it.

‘That is the target, it is as simple as that. Yes people don’t consider we moved to a new stadium and you drop points when you do that but we were too early out of the championship last year.’

  • This season is SO important for us. I think the first 5-10 games are absolutely crucial to build and cement belief and confidence. The question is can a core group of these players really step up a level – as a collective. The footballing talent is there, the spirit is there, the hunger is there. Three key things: killer instinct in front of goal, minimise conceding the first goal, and dig in and vary our game when its middle of winter at a stadium up North.

  • Personally I don’t have any title aspirations for this season, we don’t have the same quality as say Manure and Chelsea, but I’d like to see consistency and hopefully finish within 10 points of the eventual winner. Am I hoping for too much or too little?

  • I’d say too little saisho. We proved last season that we have as much quality as United and Chelsea, we just lacked that little something in the final third (hopefuly Da Silva will bring that) and a bit of defensive stability and hopefully a fit Gallas and Toure will bring that.

  • consistency is the key. the derby matches have rarely been decisive. I hope everyone is fit and ready to go against Fulham.

  • Yes, we have a decent shot, but realitically, I would just like Arsenal to challenge for the Premiership for a longer time, instead of it ending in December. Fighting till APril/May would be acceptable.

  • Sorry guy’s it’s a 2 horse race again, 10pts is probably a good call. What do you guy’s think of your link with Diarra of Chelski?

  • Oh yes the man himself has spoken and we look forward with optimism. Age is nothing but a number. Go boys go and meet the target. We need either of the two silverware mentioned by the boss
