Lucas Torreira is to have his Atletico Madrid loan spell ended early according to TuttoMercatoWeb.
The Uruguayan has endured a torrid spell in the Spanish capital, barely featuring for Diego Simeone’s side. As a result, it is thought the La Liga outfit want to end the temporary deal six months early.
However, Fiorentina are thought to retain an interest in the defensive midfielder ahead of the January transfer window.
Should Martinelli immediately return to the first XI when back from injury?
In what is proving to be a horrible season, the diminutive midfielder could actually resurrect his Arsenal career. The outfit can’t seem to find a consistent partnership in the middle of the park with Mikel Arteta chopping and changing his options. We have seen Thomas Partey both Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny, whilst the Swiss midfielder and Egyptian have both played alongside Dani Ceballos on occasions.
It’s clear that the Spaniard hasn’t got any trust in any of the three other players given how often they are switched around. Torreira could well be an option to fix that and with his defensive nous, he could provide the right shield for Partey to push further forward.
Last season, the Uruguay midfielder averaged the joint-third most clearances of any player last season in the Premier League. His dogged nature and hard-tackling style can help provide energy in front of a defence, who have kept just one clean sheet across their last 11 games.
But, there doesn’t seem to be any urge from Arteta’s end to use the player. Following the restart of football last season, Torreira started just two games across all competitions. The £27m-rated player found himself on the bench more often than not in a sorry end to his Gunners career.
With Arteta losing faith in the other options, it could well be Torreira’s time to shine. His career seemed to come to an acrimonious end last campaign, but, the early end of his loan spell could spell the start of his rebirth in N5.
