Arsenal’s game in hand on Manchester United and Manchester City, the first of two on Liverpool, against Southampton on Wednesday may be one Granit Xhaka has to sit out, according to Arsene Wenger.

Xhaka, who had been a doubt for the visit of Man United on Sunday having sustained an ankle knock in the defeat at Tottenham, was fit to face United and scored the opening goal, via a deflection off Ander Herrera, to set Arsenal on the road to a 2-0 victory.

But, even though the Swiss midfielder shock off that initial setback, Xhaka could be forced to sit out the Southampton game in midweek as Arsenal look for a victory to move above Man United into fifth, closing the gap on Man City, fourth, to three points.

Wenger has said Xhaka suffered another blow to his ankle meaning the former Borussia Dortmund man will sit out the tip to St Mary’s? Well, at least he could.

He told the Standard: ‘He got injured last time and he got a recurrence of that. We’ll see. I don’t know.’

Should the Switzerland international miss that game all being well it’ll mean Xhaka will be fit for the remaining fixtures, including the FA Cup final.
