Per Mertesacker came to Arsenal from Werder Bremen in 2011 with the German club recently admitting they would be interested in taking him back to the club.

Arsenal sold Serge Gnabry to Bremen in the summer with the clubs general manager Frank Baumann saying he could ‘imagine’ Mertesacker back at the club with his name coming up during those discussion for the midfielder, telling Bild.

‘I could well imagine Per at Werder. In the course of Serge’s transfer, we also spoke about his [Mertesacker’s] future.’

Recently the defender spoke of his delight at being Arsenal captain, however a knee injury has prevented him from being involved so far this season with the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi putting his place in the side in doubt.

With his contract expiring next summer he could be in the final throws of his stay with the Gunners?
