FA director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking, says Arsene Wenger doesn’t have much option when it comes to signing players, if he wants a successful team

With the heavily over inflated prices of English players, Brooking believes Arsene Wenger needs to look abroad as it his Wenger’s duty to the club, rather than the country for success.

Brooking says it’s due to the fact that European kids are at a higher standard of the game than their English counterparts, but it is something he wants to address in the near future.

‘I’m sure Arsene Wenger would love a team of Englishmen, but his priority is a successful side, regardless of nationality,’ Brooking said.

‘My challenge as director of football development is to lead a programme of skills development in our young generation that makes clubs look locally first when searching for talented, technically-accomplished players.

‘The harsh fact is that many clubs feel our teenage hopefuls are a long way behind the technical skills of their European counterparts.

‘With an overall population of nearly 16 million people, I do not believe we are producing the depth of talent we should and I would like to make competition for places that much harder.’

I hope Sir Trev is successful in bringing the standard of English youth players to a higher level, because if we have more English players, they might not be so bloody expensive.
