After yet another drawn game at Ashburton Grove yesterday, Arsene Wenger has spoken out over his disdain for FA Cup replays, and states he would prefer a Carling Cup style format.

Wenger’s claims came after playing Bolton oopp North in a replay during the week, and then making life difficult even further by taking the subsequent FA Cup to a further match.

‘There is a lot that can be done to help the problem of games but nobody is willing to do it,’ he said. ‘Replays in the FA Cup could be stopped, with penalties being held straight away.’ Wenger said.

‘There is no magic solution because in order to cut down the number of games, something has to be sacrificed and to do that would damage the traditions of the English game. I would be very happy with stopping replays but other clubs I suspect would not.’

As an Arsenal supporter I’m more than used to playing a large number of games per season, and agree that cutting the replays out of the competition would benefit us immensely, but as a lover of football in general I could only see this as a detrimental move for the smaller clubs.

I guess we’re just victims of our own success.

  • The real clue here is what Wenger siad earlier in the week. He said he would never manage a national side becuase “I don’t consider internationals as important as other people.” i.e. GET RID OF THE POINTLESS, MONEY SPINNING FRIENDLIES!!!!!

  • see the Hudds Town site, FA Cup article, which quotes Wenger, Vital Hudds proposes a good solution i think, which all u bigger clubs could be happy with.

  • Replays especially for little clubs against the big clubs can be an all to important money spinner for the little clubs but then I guess to the likes of Wenger we are nobodies anyway and shouldn’t have a say!

  • bmb, that’s a little unfair to make a comment like that. Arsene’s job is to look out for the best interests of the gunners, but I’m sure he’d be the first to recognise the need for every small club that operates on a tight budget to maximise their revenue, in what could be crucial to their very existence. »»Arsene Knows««

  • I obviously don’t understand the finer nuances of what certain traditions in the FA Cup mean to long-time English fans, but I don’t see how boring draws like the one against Blackburn, where one side merely goes for a replay, do anything to add to the lustre of a cup competition. Surely replays can eliminate this sort of crap. It wasn’t exactly an advertisement for the game, was it?
