Wenger Wants Replays Scrapped

After yet another drawn game at Ashburton Grove yesterday, Arsene Wenger has spoken out over his disdain for FA Cup replays, and states he would prefer a Carling Cup style format.

Wenger’s claims came after playing Bolton oopp North in a replay during the week, and then making life difficult even further by taking the subsequent FA Cup to a further match.

‘There is a lot that can be done to help the problem of games but nobody is willing to do it,’ he said. ‘Replays in the FA Cup could be stopped, with penalties being held straight away.’ Wenger said.

‘There is no magic solution because in order to cut down the number of games, something has to be sacrificed and to do that would damage the traditions of the English game. I would be very happy with stopping replays but other clubs I suspect would not.’

As an Arsenal supporter I’m more than used to playing a large number of games per season, and agree that cutting the replays out of the competition would benefit us immensely, but as a lover of football in general I could only see this as a detrimental move for the smaller clubs.

I guess we’re just victims of our own success.
