Arsene Wenger is yet to make a decision regarding who will wear the captains armband at Arsenal next season.

So far in pre-season he has handed Kolo Toure, William Gallas and Gilberto Silva the chance to prove themselves as captain.

While Thierry Henry was named captain last season, it was midfielder Gilberto who often led the young Arsenal team. It certainly brought the best out of the Brazilian, he scored 11 goals last season. That’s just under a goal every 4 games, not bad for a holding midfielder!

His impressive season as captain last Term has led to cries from many Arsenal fans for him to be named skipper this summer.

Indeed, reading Arsene Wenger’s comments from his pre-Emirates Cup press confrence, you would think he had made his decision: ‘The captain last year was Gilberto and there is no reason to take it away from him.’

But no, it’s not that straight forward with Arsene Wenger. He went on to say that the best posistion for a captain is centre back: ‘At the moment in some games it is Gallas and some games it is Kolo because I feel that the centre back position is the best one from which to captain the team.

‘Those three will be leaders of the team for the season and whoever plays will captain the team.

‘We are a very young side and the experienced players have a big part to play. That is why I try to multiply the influence of the big players.’

There is one solution. This isn’t an opinion, just a thought. How about playing Gilberto as a centre back? He did a good job there last season when called upon, and it would allow him to continue leading the team. It would also make room for the likes of Denilson, Diaby and Flamini.

Any thoughts?
