Arsene Wenger praised the attitude and performance of Per Mertesacker following Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Chelsea.

Mertesacker, our club captain, last started a game for Arsenal over 13 months ago and he had only returned to the pitch as a substitute in the three one victory over Everton earlier in the month.

Putting in a fine defensive performance at Wembley Stadium, the World Cup winner was a key part of our success on the day and he came in for particular praise from Wenger as he spoke to the Official Site in his post game media press conference.

‘Per Mertesacker is, for me, a fantastic example for any young professional footballer. What he did today is just a consequence of an unbelievable attitude, even though he was not selected until the Everton game.’

Wenger added quickly about his attitude.

‘He played his first game and when he was not selected, he worked even harder. That`s why I would pay a special tribute to him tonight.’

Mertesacker didn’t just draw praise from Wenger, former centre half Martin Keown was waxing lyrical about the German as well.

‘They should name this after Per Mertesacker. This should be called The Mertesacker Final, because I can`t believe the performance he put in. The pressure he must have been under. He`s been out, he`s played one game this season and it`s the biggest game of the season. To perform as he did, the three seemed to suit him actually.’

‘We`ve not seen him in a three really because he`s been almost last in line. He was magnificent, as all the players were. Perhaps it was Arsène Wenger`s finest hour.’
