Manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that Crystal Palace were simply better than Arsenal on Monday evening and wanted the result more than we seemed to.

Travelling to Selhurst Park for the game, Arsenal came out with a poor three nil defeat against Sam Allardyce’s side and with tensions at the club already fraying, this result has just put those issues right back at the forefront of everyone’s eyes.

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference, a very disappointed Wenger had to hold his hands up to the poor performance.

‘We faced a team who played very deep, went for a game that was very direct, and we lost many direct duels and many second balls because they were sharper than us and more decisive. Overall, we created many dangerous situations but we couldn`t score. In the first half, we had problems getting in the game after 10 or 15 minutes. We came back into the game and had some dangerous situations that we couldn`t score from. In the second half, they came out strong, scored the second goal and from then on you could see it was more difficult. Even if we created more dangerous situations, we were always vulnerable on the counter-attacks because we threw everything forward. That`s a typical situation involving a team who tries to go forward and a team who plays on the counter-attack.’

Asked directly if the players failed to give 100% effort in the game, Wenger dodged that by saying.

‘I wouldn`t say that, no.’

Adding about what the team lacked.

‘Maybe it was the fact that we have lost a few away games. It`s really strange because for a long time we were unbeaten away from home, but since then we have been unable to win away from home. You could feel that it had an impact on us after the second goal tonight.’

One thing he was clearer on was that he could more than understand the disappointment following the game.

‘I want the fans to support the team. I think they are extremely disappointed and I can understand that because we all are. It is understandable that they are disappointed. We played with a desire to win the game tonight, with a very offensive team because we knew we had to score goals. We knew what we would face. Their keeper took their free-kicks on the halfway line, so it was important for us to win the ball in the air, win the second balls, get the ball down and then play our game. From the start onwards, in the decisive moments of the game, they were sharper.’

Of course the defeat complicates the top four battle but he wouldn’t be drawn on whether the game would effect his future.

‘It`s going to be very difficult. Honestly, I am disappointed tonight. After such a long time, to see that we`ve lost a game the way we`ve lost it is of course very disappointing. I think it would be inconvenient to speak about me tonight, it`s more painful to lose the game like the way we lost this one. It`s part of our job to rebuild confidence. We have a week to do it, a week to prepare and we go to Middlesbrough for another difficult game. It`s our job and we`ll try to do it.’

Going back to the game itself, Wenger admitted we had to win this one and the fact we didn’t means it wasn’t ‘good enough’.

‘I`m deeply disappointed because the performance we produced was not good enough. We knew we had to win the game tonight. Not only did we not score but as well we conceded three goals, so overall it`s a very disappointing performance. What disappointed me most was the fact that we lost decisive duels in zones where you cannot afford it. That was very disappointing. Palace have beaten Chelsea two weeks ago, and they beat us tonight, so that shows they have the quality. They are good going forward. But I think we made it easy for them. They didn`t need that tonight, they have enough quality to beat any team and they have been winning for a while. You could see why tonight.’
