Arsene Wenger hailed the performance of William Gallas after the Frenchman put in a solid display against Kiev as the Gunners fought their way through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Gallas had been stripped of the captaincy earlier in the week after he publicly slated the Arsenal team and it’s efforts, but the defender looked to try and rectify that with a good performance against Kiev.

Wenger said, ‘I believe his focus was great,’

‘He wanted to do well and you could see he was completely committed in the game. Overall, I feel he did well.’

‘The crowd responded well, somewhere, they acknowledge that he was a committed captain and I was very happy that the crowd reacted in this way to him.’

Other media outlets would have you believe that not only did the Arsenal fans not even respond to a sheepish looking Gallas, but that Billy also ‘blocked’ van Persie goal bound effort on the line. It was not the greatest effort on goal by the Frenchman by any stretch of the imagination, but he was trying to poke in a shot that I am pretty sure was going wide.

I was not at the game last night, but watched on tv, however I hope some of our attending Gooners can confirm that my ears are not letting me down when I say I’m positive I heard mucho applause for some of his earlier touches and a half rousing rendition of ‘Billy Gallas is our friend’
