Manchester United manager and arch nemesis of Arsene Wenger, Alex Ferguson has been in charge of the same club for twenty years.

That in itself is a great achievment, but considering the amount of silverware he has taken to Old Trafford, you can only have respect for the man, even if we think he’s a tosser.

The Wenger-Ferguson rivalry has been the biggest in Premiership history, indeed nothing comes even close. Yet despite all their confrontations over the years, Mr Wenger still had time to say something nice about his enemy as he approaches his 20 year anniversary.

Wenger said: ‘I have seen half of those years from very close up. What his legacy will be, I do not know, but it is a tremendous achievement.’

‘When you think that the average life of a manager is one year and seven days, and somebody has done 20, it is remarkable consistency.’

‘It is a remarkable achievement, unique. A unique one in Europe at the top level. No-one could say the opposite. It needs tremendous motivation, tremendous stamina, and he has that.’

Wenger added: ‘With the two of us it was more about competitiveness than composure. I feel we had some heated times – but time will settle things and there is a respect there now.’

  • I’d be fascinated to see if they could keep this civility up if Arsenal and Man U were to find themselves battling for the EPL title. It’s almost scary how nice they’ve been since pizza gate. Even the FA Cup final didn’t see them saying too much, though I guess that’s because they were under orders from the FA suits.

  • the man has class, he knows an acheivement when he sees one and wenger and fergie are class acts that have been around and will stay around for a long ttime. all these little managers like the fat on down the lane won’t stay half as long.
