Manager Arsene Wenger is meeting with the press today to preview the Community Shield with Chelsea this weekend and he’s insisted Alexis Sanchez will stay this season.

Meeting with the media, Alexis was obviously a hot topic of conversation having returned to training this week and speculation about his future continues to be at the forefront of reports.

Speaking to Sky Sports Wenger said he knew Alexis would ‘respect’ Arsenal’s decision to keep him this season irrespective of whether a new deal ultimately becomes signed.

Questioned whether the player had asked to leave the club, Wenger explained.

‘I will not give you anything on that. He is focused. My decision is clear – he will stay and he will respect that. It’s as simple as that.’

Wenger went on to say that given how long Alexis had been back with us, he hadn’t yet decided on whether he would play at Wembley or not.

‘He rest needs to work on his fitness, but once he’s in the game he’s sharp and looks like he’s never been away. He’s over the flu, and that was never a problem for us. The frame of mind of a football player is quite easy – once you go out and play you enjoy the game. This passes quickly so enjoy every moment. He loves so much the game and what he does.’

Whilst Wenger said there was ‘nothing concrete’ when it came to contract talks with Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, he did say of Lucas Perez.

‘We have a congestion of strikers. I don’t like to lose him because he’s a top-quality striker, but we have many and at some stage too much competition is no competition. If he finds a satisfactory solution, at least for the short-term, we will do it.’
