Arsene Wenger has shown supreme confidence in his team as they prepare to play CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, suggesting they can go one step further than last seasons runners-up berth.

‘We can do it this year,’ said Wenger, “I’ve said that since the start of the season. We’ve shown that we can believe we can do it through our results. What we need now is the consistency,’

The boss was full of praise for the way in which his young side has progressed thus far. ‘I believe that first of all you need the new players to integrate into the team. Frankly I considered at the start of the season that we would see the real impact of a guy like Emmanuel Adebayor this year. He has made a big improvement.”

The new signings were not overlooked as he continued his praise, ‘Tomas Rosicky has settled in quickly and he is a very impressive player, William Gallas of course brings something special to the team.”

Arsenal will be confronted by the champions, and current league leaders in Russia. CSKA are no strangers to European success, having lifted the UEFA Cup as recently as 2005.

The Gunners have made two previous trips to Moscow in the Champions League, Spartak in 2000 and Lokomotiv three years later, and are still waiting for their first win on Russian soil.

The travelling eighteen man squad includes the Brazilian U-19 captain Denilson, and left-back Gael Clichy, although neither are likely to start. In the wintry conditions one gets the feeling that Arsene would not be unhappy with a point, although a victory would virtually ensure qualification for the knock-out phase.
