The Europa League season got underway with the opening round of group games played on Thursday.

Lyon, a club mentioned ahead of the games as a potential outside favourite for the competition, got underway with a draw against Apollon Limassol.

However, it was a disastrous start for Everton though as Atalanta marked their return to European football with a 3-0 win in Italy – a first half to remember for the Italian club was one for the Toffees to forget.

There was no such problem for AC Milan, as they won convincingly in Austria with a 5-1 result matched by Nice in Belgium when the French side saw off Zulte Waregem. Meanwhile, Zenit St Petersburg went one better – they scored five but didn’t concede against Vardar.

Spanish clubs Villarreal and Real Sociedad – who have a 100% record and currently sit second in the early stages of La Liga – both made winning starts in the visits from Astana and Rosenborg, respectively.

Arsenal’s demotion to the Europa League saw the game at the Emirates Stadium delayed by an hour following crowd trouble in the visit of Cologne – when the game eventually got underway the Gunners recovered from falling behind to an early goal to see off the German club 3-1.

Here’s a round-up of the Europa League results.
