Having been allowed to leave Arsenal for a loan at Middlesbrough last season does Calum Chambers have a future in North London? Well, it certainly doesn’t look good for him.

There’s no shortage of admirers for the England defender, Newcastle and Everton have been credited with an interest but could Chambers return to Southampton, three years on from his Arsenal arrival in a £16m deal.

According to various reports, including those in the Sun, Southampton do indeed hold an interest in the versatile defender and would like to re-sign him this summer, on a season-long loan.

During his absence from the Emirates Stadium others have moved above him, already seen as a factor behind a temporary exit last season, including the progression of Rob Holding into a first team role after his arrival from Bolton, which also contributed to the departure of Chambers.

Hampshire-born, with family based on the south coast, this could prove the ideal move for Chambers, 22, who faces an uncertain future at Arsenal. He wouldn’t be drawn on his next move when questioned recently.

Currently on international duty with England at the U21 European Championships, Chambers’ future should be resolved shortly but his time at Arsenal could well be over, albeit with another 12 month loan initially taking him back to St Mary’s?
