Manager Arsene Wenger has been explaining his decision to play Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at wing back in recent games and given an update on his future at Arsenal.

With a defensive and formational switch in recent times seeing the England international line up at wing back, Ox has been pretty impressive in his performances and it is his sixth position of the campaign so far.

With plenty of speculation about his future owing to game time and his words in interviews, Wenger was adamant the club wanted to keep him but it would be something that found a conclusion over the summer.

Speaking to the Official Site in his pre Leicester City press conference, Wenger explained about his future.

‘It will be decided in the summer – we have a big job to do in the summer.’

Talking about the 23 year old’s performances this season, ignoring the hint that sentence gives over Wenger’s own future, he went on to explain that his versatility was an asset but he felt his long term future continued to be in the middle of midfield.

‘He`s done very well at wing-back. In the future, on long term, he will play in central midfield. What he is doing at the moment will help him to be a successful central midfielder as well. But at the moment I feel that this wing-back role has suited him well.’

He went on to say.

‘First of all he can use well his power. And it suits him well as well because he is facing the game when he gets the ball. It`s a different kind of game to be marked by somebody, get rid, turn and go forward, or to face the game. I think he looks to be comfortable when he is running at people and when he has the ball at his feet.’

Wenger definitely felt the new formation and system suited him at full back though and he praised Oxlade-Chamberlain’s defensive efforts in the current position.

‘When we speak about systems, some systems give a little advantage to some players because it just suits them a little bit better, comforts their qualities. He has maybe benefited from it. I think Alex is one of the players who has developed very well mentally. He is more positive, more confident, more mature. He was sometimes a bit negative with his own performances. And I think on that front he is much better now.’
