Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed on Friday that he turned down the chance to manage the French national team because there is not enough love for football and too much national pride at stake.

In addition to the French national team Wenger has also been linked with the English and Japanese national teams.

Speaking on the subject Wenger said: “I never felt attracted to them because I don`t find [them] as important as people do. I turned France down already.

“I just find in national teams there is more national pride involved than love of football.”

Delighted to hear you have more sense than to take on a national team, Arsene. Long may your love affair with Arsenal continue.

  • when is AW signing the extension? and I don’t want to sound picky, but you might want to fix the comma in the end 😛

  • Stop! Grammar time!!! (never pass up the opportunity to drop in a gratuitous mc hammer reference…). I’m with arsene on this – I only ever get worked up about england when it comes to the finals of a major tournament, then that rapidly dissipates after our first performance of said tournament, when i ab reminded that actually england are dull to watch, unimaginative and overhyped. Luckily, i will not have to be confronted with this problem during the euro 2008 finals, as it looks like McClaren is finally performing to his maximum levels (ie. crap) and will save all england fans the problem of having to shell out a small fortune on tickets for the finals. »»Arsene Knows««

  • International football is a complete bore, when the friendlies are on tv I rarely watch because it’s so dull and compared to the Premiership it’s tactically inferiror. Waste of space.

  • I love International football, the clash of cultures, the fantastic world cup tournaments and euro’s, the African nations, the copa America. Even pre match national anthems get me excited. I have to go now the doctors are waiting to put me in my straight jacket and pop me some pills!

  • Good we need him more than France does…besides like he has said before international friendlies are boring.

  • international football is a waste of time. there should be an agreement between the clubs and the national teams regarding the release of players and chalkout the international fixtures in such a way which would be beneficial both to the country and the club..

  • Who could ever replace Arsene? I don’t see any manager in the Premier League who can take his place. Maybe Jurgen Klinsmann?

  • arsene makes sense, as usual. i think its the same level of feeling whether a fan supports his country or the club he loves. I like to watch the world cups and the european championships, so im not against all intl football. However i dont see the point in all these friendlies, when more harm than good comes out of it. if a team plays well, there is little comfort coz its only a friendly, but if they play badly or a player is injured, then it sucks. basically a no win situation.
