Arsenal`s pre-season fixtures get underway this week with Arsene Wenger`s boys blowing off the cobwebs with a game against Lens this Friday.

With the Euros now over and training in full swing we hope to hear more from the gaffer to whet our appetites for the new season. Wenger has today been talking about the differences in culture between now and 10-15 years ago as he takes training sessions with players who are already fit and not full of ale and pies.

Back in the days of Tony Adams and Ray Parlour it was common place to go for a few beers after training during the season so you can only imagine what they got up to in the summer and the state of their fitness when returning for pre-season, however the game has become a lot more professional and the players tend to take a lot better care of themselves.

Wenger says that this helps with preparations..

“[The target is] to get them as fit as possible, and what has changed compared to 10 or 15 years ago [is that] the players come back basically fit today.

“There`s no overweight players anymore, there`s no players anymore who have not prepared or done his homework and you can start straight away with normal training. Before you had to dedicate two or three weeks first to get everybody to the stage where they can practice normally.

“It`s not especially individuals, it is just the lifestyle that has changed in the last 15 years. Everybody around you, not just football players, is fitter than he was 15 years ago.

“[We want the players] to be as sharp as possible. Look at the schedule we have, it is a very difficult schedule and [we must] focus on the players who are here because they are certainly the players who will start the season.”
