Arsene Wenger has said that he expects Per Mertesacker to offer us a very good goal threat from set pieces.

Speaking to arsenal.com Wenger admitted that he sees Mertesacker excelling in the ‘Stoke’ type of games in the Premiership, and he also thinks he can get himself regularly on the scoresheet.

‘I expect some goals on set pieces from Per because even in Marseille we had nine corners and they had one. Out of nine corners away from home you expect to be a bit more dangerous.’

For Stoke specifically, Wenger added that Mertesacker should be able to use his intelligence on the pitch appropriately, but also get stuck in when needed.

‘I brought him here for more than this type of game, because he is a good player. He is a good organiser, he is an intelligent player and physically he is getting sharper and sharper.’

Being able to play it, as well as get muddy, should serve us well.
