Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were both speaking after the Boxing Day victory over West Bromwich Albion.

With manager Arsene Wenger already making his thoughts on the fans known for how they stuck with the side given the dominance in the game, despite us needing a late Olivier Giroud goal to take all three points on the day, Mertesacker was also speaking about the backing of the supporters when he spoke to the Official Site in his own post game press conference and he knew how important that can be for the players in tricky moments of a match.

He also more than admitted it was down to the players to spur the fans on to begin with though.

‘It`s really down to us to show that we are good enough and can put the intensity in. We`ve spoken about that a lot of times – when we put in the intensity, when we match teams physically, we are almost unstoppable. But if you don`t do that, if you lack another five or 10 per cent, you won`t win any Premier League games.’

He went on to say.

‘The team has to lead the way. The fans will obviously need to get behind us as well, as they always have done, especially at those times where we play a lot of games. The fans understand that there will sometimes be bad results. But we need to play the Arsenal way. That means intensity from top to bottom, from the first until the last minute. That`s our identity and that`s what the people are identifying with. We need to show them that we identify with it too and get good results. That`s what makes people happy. It`s down to the players to show that we can put in the intensity and can get everyone involved. The fans will follow, as they always have done.’

As for Koscielny in his own interview with the wider media post game, he discussed the game in general but opened with his thoughts on how it was such a vital victory given the previous two losses.

‘It was so important because last week we lost two games in seven days and we wanted to get back to winning three points. It was a hard game because West Brom play with their qualities, which include making big blocks, and that made it hard for us to find a good solution. We kept our calm, we tried to continue to play left and right and move their block, and we know you can always find a solution at the beginning or end of games against teams like these. Today we scored in the last minute with Oli. It`s normal for us to win these games.’

Like Wenger, he also had praise for how difficult West Brom made it but that’s what they had been expecting anyway.

‘With their quality, we knew they would come with a good block and defend all together. They have the commitment they need and try to defend together, but we wanted the three points more. We tried to play with the ball on the floor and play quick passes, and today it was very important to go home with the three points. It was an important win.’

With Olivier Giroud starting the game once more and being the match winner, Koscielny went on to say of his colleague.

‘He stayed focused with the team. We are not 11 or 18 players, we are 25 players. All the players who play for Arsenal have a big part to play during the season because of injuries and suspensions, and everyone needs to be ready to fight for this club. Today, Oli started and he tried to give his best on the pitch. He fought and it`s good for him to score the winning goal.’
