It’s being reported today that Arsenal could be planning on entertaining a player swap deal with Manchester United next January.

The stories centre around the ongoing uncertainty surrounding German Mesut Ozil and his future at the club with only 12 months remaining on his current contract and no progress so far in signing a new deal.

football.london are one of many to report the speculation, and they suggest that talks have once again broken down between all parties after Arsene Wenger earlier admitted talks had ‘slowed’ and the rumours build on Manchester United’s apparent interest in the player, with Ozil and Jose Mourinho working together previously at Real Madrid.

The links are easy to make, so whether or not there’s any substance here remains to be seen.

This is where the reports tend to go typically speculative though. On one hand, as above, the suggestion is that we’ll try and deal with United for a mutually beneficial outcome especially in light of the likelihood of losing Alexis Sanchez on a free and having to invest to replace him, but there is also talk of doing a deal with Inter Milan with Joao Mario coming in the other direction.
