Double winning captain Frank McLintock is sad that Arsenal could not go on playing at the famous Highbury Stadium, but was pleased to be involved in it’s history.
Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports news, Frank’s sadness at leaving the old girl was there for everyone to see.
‘When you step back from it and think exactly what it means it’s more or less finished,’ he told Sky Sports News.
‘The turf is going, at least part of the stands are going to come down, and the place where we got some fame and probably created a little bit of history for ourselves and the club – winning the double for the first time ever in 1971 and winning the Fairs Cup that gave us the confidence to do the double – to think that’s all finished now it’s really quite sad.
‘To think you can’t ever come back and see this place again. It’s such a beautiful ground.
‘You still see other grounds getting re-done because they’re dilapidated, but this is still one of the best grounds in Europe and yet some of it is getting pulled down.’
I think the majority of Gooners would echo his sentiments, but it is time to move on and Highbury will always be in our hearts.
