Arsenal chairman, Peter Hill-Wood will pull out all the stops to make sure Thierry Henry remains a Gooner

Henry announced his intention to stay at Arsenal this weekend, and it was swiftly followed up by the chairman vowing to offer the Frenchman the best deal he could.

‘Now Thierry has made his mind up about his future there is no point hanging around,’ Hill-Wood said. ‘Talks will start soon – very soon. He is 28 and is in tremendous shape, so a five-year deal would not be out of the question.’

‘We know Thierry could earn more elsewhere but we’ll go to the limit where his salary is concerned. But he is very loyal.’

Henry always insisted that the delaying of his decision was not about the money, but about the ability of the club to match his ambition, something that Mr Hill-Wood thinks will be far easier with Henry still with the club.

‘It will show people that we are indeed ambitious and want to keep our best players, that can only help when we want to bring in new ones.’
