Stuart Pearce says players such as Thierry Henry changed his mind about playing on past 40.

The England hero felt fit and ready for action, but the thought of being made to look foolish by the pacey Frenchman forced his hand, and decided retirement was the better option.

‘Manchester City had just been promoted, I was only 40, felt reasonably fit and believed I could have gone on for another season,’ said Pearce.

‘But when I thought about the prospect of going into the Premier League and playing against someone like Thierry Henry, I knew I would just embarrass myself. It is the likes of him that forced me into retirement.’

Pearce went on to heap praise onto the Arsenal captain saying watching Henry was akin to being at school.

‘The only thing I can liken it to is playground football when one kid is so much better than the rest,’ he said. ‘At times it is that breathtaking.

‘He has an arrogance which is born out of his ability. He knows he is a good player.

‘After matches, he always talks about the team but he knows he is the man who makes Arsenal tick.’

Lets just hope the Premiership doesn’t lose the leagues most exciting player, although I’m sure a few readers will disagree.
