Dutch club Willem II have completed the signing of Arsenal’s Dan Crowley.

Crowley, who spent part of last season in the Eredivisie with Go Ahead Eagles, has been viewed as having much potential for the future. But he will not return to the Gunners as the midfielder has been permanently offloaded.

A statement on the Official Website read: ‘Young midfielder Dan Crowley has completed a permanent transfer to Dutch club Willem II.’

Before his loan in Dutch football Crowley, 19, had spent time at Barnsley and Oxford but the England U19 international leaves North London having failed to make his Arsenal breakthrough.

‘We’d like to wish Dan well for this new stage in his career,’ concluded the statement.

Meanwhile, a player at the other end of his footballing career, set to play his final as a footballer at Arsenal before moving into a coaching position at the Emirates Stadium, Per Mertesacker has spelt out his desire to play as much football as he can this season.

He told the Official Website: ‘I want to make the most of it. Last season was not satisfying for me. The end was a fairytale but the way to that was very tough. I want to stay injury-free, be an option for the manager to get picked every weekend. That`s the target. To make it as enjoyable as I can. They manage me very well at the minute. I am not doing everything because nobody knows how my knee reacts at the moment. We are not overloading. I am fine – they manage me well – I am not doing every double session.’

Adding: ‘When we come to games you will see the reaction. Games every three days, seven days, the rhythm of it. At the end of the season that was OK but I need to really find out how well I am when it comes to playing 90-minute games. I have lots to give. Players embrace that. As long as I am there I want to play and contribute. Being able to train and make an impact makes me feel good. Being an option and pushing the other players is something I embrace because when you are injured you can do nothing, which was horrible for me.’

But will Alexis Sanchez be his teammate this season?

Arsene Wenger is ‘confident’ of this being the case, Alexis’ message was a little less so over the weekend though.

However, the German defender has said the Chilean deserves a break after his exploits at the Confederations Cup and he should be left alone to make up his mind, which will best benefit all concerned.

Quoted by Sky Sports he added: He needs a break now. He needs to relax. He has done a lot for us. He played almost every game last season and then the Confederations Cup. You need to leave him alone to make up his mind what he wants to do. It’s his decision. If he feels good, comfortable, he can play with freedom.
