Olivier Giroud has been quoted as saying that contrary to speculation he hasn’t yet signed the new contract deal Arsenal have offered him…but it might be signed soon.

Speaking to Sky Sports following the victory on Boxing Day against West Bromwich Albion – courtesy of Giroud’s late goal in the game to take him to six for the campaign so far despite it being only his first league start – the Frenchman did admit it had been a ‘difficult’ season so far but also that he was close to penning the new deal that had been in discussions and is on the table.

He was of course pleased to finally get that Premier League start though following his substitute showings.

‘I came back a bit late from the Euros and it was nice for my body because I could rest but not good for me because the team was doing well and another striker was doing well up front. This season has been difficult because also I was injured for a month and a half so it hasn’t been easy. I don’t want to talk too much about me but it was a big day for me, but a turning point for the team because if we didn’t win we would have been in trouble.’

He went on to say with the second half of the campaign almost with us now.

‘It is all about keeping the focus high. Always keep working hard at training. I was speaking with the boss, we had a couple of discussions together and he explained to me why I hadn’t played too much until here. But football is an everlasting new beginning, as I used to say, and you always have to keep focused and wait for your time.’

Adding when questioned specifically about the contract talk and whether the rumours suggesting it had already been signed were true.

‘People have been saying I have signed a new contract. It is not true but maybe soon.’
