Former manager and Championship winning goalkeeper George Swindin has passed away.

Swindin made 297 appearances for Arsenal in the pre and post war teams before a spell later on as Arsenal manager.

90 years old and suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, George passed away at Ketting General Hospital yesterday.

Swindin started his career with BRadford City in 1934 and joined Arsenal two years later. He won a league championship medal in 1938 before his playing career was interrupted and he began a new role as an army physical training officer in World War Two. After the war ended he returned to Arsenal and conceeded only 32 goals in the 1947/48 season helping Arsenal to be crowned champions. He added an FA Cup winners’ medal in 1950, before again picking up a championship medal in 1953.
