Having himself been linked with Arsenal before joining Paris Saint Germain from Wolfsburg in January, Julian Draxler has said he ‘would love’ to play alongside Mesut Ozil at the Parc des Princes.
As we (more than) know, Ozil is moving towards the final 12 months of his Arsenal – he will either resume talks on an extended contract in the summer or move on. If it proved the latter his German teammate has said Ozil should definitely join him in France.
Draxler told the BBC World Service: ‘I would love to play with him every day. For me, he’s a great player. I enjoy to play with him for every training, every match with the German national team.’
Ok, Draxler has again made it clear he would like him to join him in Paris but would Ozil be as willing to swap the Premier League for Ligue 1? Not only would the former Real Madrid midfielder ‘help’ PSG he would also ‘enjoy the life’ in France too.
Questioned if Ozil would join PSG, Draxler added: ‘Yes, I think he’s a great player. He would help every team in the world and I think he would enjoy the life here and even to play for PSG.’
A move to PSG would also see Ozil handed considerable wages, probably an amount Arsenal couldn’t, or wouldn’t, match. However, admitting to Premier League interest in him in January, Draxler, 23, insisted his own move to France wasn’t influenced by money.
He said: ‘You know we have been in talks with some clubs in England as well, but this time I decided to make the decision as to what I feel and what I prefer for myself. There were some teams that wanted me from the Premier League but it was not like it was very, very close. Football is about making decisions and that’s what I did. I decided that PSG is the best club for me at the moment.’
Yes, the Parisian way of life would be good but London, whilst not being for everyone, isn’t too bad either. Players want to win trophies, which would be almost guaranteed at PSG – who lost their title to Monaco this week – but would Ligue 1 really hold the challenge a player like Ozil, 28, would relish?
