Clearout continues: Champions League outfit re-open talks over £10.8m-rated defender

Lazio have resumed negotiations with Arsenal over the potential signing of Shkodran Mustafi, according to Citta Celeste.

Sokratis Papastathopoulous has already exited the club after having his contract terminated by mutual consent yesterday afternoon.

The £10.8m-rated Gunners centre-half has been a ghost in north London, having not featured in any game since the 3-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League back on Boxing Day 2020.

Should Arsenal sell Shkodran Mustafi this month?

Yes

No

Arsenal have embarked on what can only be described as a mass clearout this window. The likes of Mesut Ozil, William Saliba, Sead Kolasinac and the Greek defender have all been shown the door as Mikel Arteta aims to streamline his squad.

Adding the World Cup winner to the list will only brighten up the day of anyone associated with the club after what has been a torrid last few years with Mustafi around. He’s been a liability since his arrival from Valencia with the Lee Dixon claiming ex-manager Gary Neville couldn’t sell the defender before the north London outfit bid so much for the Germany international.

Mustafi’s ability to turn a normal situation into a disaster has been all too common since he joined the club in 2016. His cock-up during the 3-2 loss at home to Crystal Palace as he let Wilfried Zaha in to score one of the easiet goals of his career moments after the team had equalised.

This is a joyous month for anyone connected to the club. There seems to be a firesale at the club as they finally look to correct the mistakes of years gone by. Mustafi’s exit is just one more departure which spells the start of a new era at the Emirates Stadium.

In other news, one Arsenal target has requested to leave a La Liga outfit.
