With the culmination of the Group stage games in this year’s Champions League competition, Group winners known and Group runners up known and knockout stage ties now set in the fixture lists following the recent draw, UEFA.com have decided to announce a Team of the Group Stage first eleven.

The team has been built based on fantasy team points awarded to each player given their involvement in each of the games so far, so obviously goals scored and clean sheets kept features highly for the players who find themselves in this particular starting XI.

Fans will have their own picks and will no doubt disagree with some of the choices, but it is an interesting and fairly balanced eleven – although there are some very notable players missing.

From 1 to 11.

Goalkeeper:
Jan Oblak (Atlético Madrid) – 39 points
Kept four clean sheets and saved a penalty on matchday one.

Defenders:
Mathias Jørgensen (København) – 38 points
Four clean sheets achieved, two goals scored.

Sergio Escudero (Sevilla) – 37 points
His defence posted a group stage record-equalling five shut-outs.

Ludwig Augustinsson (København) – 34 points
Only two goals conceded by Group G’s third-placed side.

Midfielders:
Mesut Özil (Arsenal) – 44 points
Scored four goals, including a hat-trick at Ludogorets, with three assists.

André Silva (Porto) – 41 points
Four goals, two assists.

Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City) – 37 points
Struck four of Leicester’s seven goals, also providing an assist.

Ricardo Quaresma (Beşiktaş) – 36 points
Three goals, three assists.

Forwards:
Lionel Messi (Barcelona) – 58 points
Scored ten, one short of the group stage record, including trebles v Celtic and Manchester City.

Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain) – 41 points
Second top goalscorer with six, one assist.

Dries Mertens (Napoli) – 39 points
Four goals, three assists.
