Arsene Wenger today named his Carling cup squad to take on Liverpool as Ashburton Grove tonight, and despite the obvious lack of first team players, the squad still looks rather tasty.

The Arsenal boss has stuck with his youth policy for the Carling Cup (a policy that apparently degrades the competition despite the fact that we’ve reached three semi finals and a final 6 years) clash against Rafa’s scousers tonight, yet the squad looks surprisingly strong.

Season after season we hear about the lack of strength in depth in our squad, yet this current crop of players has some very able back up in the form of young players fighting to ply their trade in the premier league.

There are a few players taking to the pitch in red and white this evening who would walk into to most teams starting line up in this country, yet they have to be content with playing in cup matches, filling in for injured players or making substitute appearances.

Arsene’s mix of reserve and fringe players should be more than a match for a Liverpool team lacking Torres, Gerrard and Mascherano …… as long as they keep their concentration that is.
