The Admin team on Vital Arsenal asked that more Gooners give their detailed opinion so that it may be published for people all over the world to read.

Just two days after asking Vital Arsenal member and good friend Dave (aka Daveski aka Big Dave) provided us with this superb read…

Back in my days of Sixth Form, (for people that dont no what that is, its further education after your last year at school) every holiday period, like Easter, Christmas and Summer Holidays, my old year and the year above us (we got on like Ashley Cole and a mobile phone…) anyway, we would always organise a football match with a return leg. Some people are at uni’s all over England, and some just got out of trowbridge.

I always take up my prefered role in football. Central Defensive Midfielder. id always say ‘I’ll take up my Paddy Vieira role’. Today was different.

‘I will marshall it, in my Gilberto Silva Role’….did I really say that?

Quote from last season by daveski on vital arsenal.

‘I’m fed up with Gilberto he gives the ball away all the time its so frustrating’

Which was met with a lot of agreements and there was a debate on if he should start all the time.

Thierry Henry’s injury was always a cause for concern. Who would lead us? The answer in my view was Kolo Toure. The answer i got was from Thierry Henry at the start of the season…

‘Gilberto will be my vice captain this season, he has plenty of experience and is a very important player for us, he keeps the younger players calm and is a rock’

The season didn’t begin great for Arsenal on a whole, but the 1st Arsenal goal scorer at our new home in th league was by the number 19 defensive midfielder and vice captain Gilberto Silva.

Since Henry’s absence, the captains arm band has been passed to Gilberto.

‘I want to show the faith put in me by Arsene Wenger and Thierry by giving my best for Arsenal and to be a great captain in Thierry’s absence, I’m honoured to be Arsenal captain.’

In the last 8 games, Gilberto has scored 7 league goals. A phenominal return from a player that has for the last 3 or 4 years has been scoring around 2 a season, I mean what would you expect from a defensive midfielder. He steps in when theres an argument and the Arsenal players listen to him.

Can an arm band form a player from a good player that slopperly gives away alay, to an integral cog in the Arsenal engine?

I believe the faith shown in him to take on the captaincy at a huge club like Arsenal has given Gilberto more than a boost, its revitalised him. He has more to do, and is now a very important figure on the pitch.

Do you think he would be playing the same if he didnt have a band round his arm saying ‘CAPTAIN’ written on it?

His tracking back is phenominal,I know thats his job, but he is literally everywhere on the pitch at the moment, stopping those goul bound shots, to sticking 1 in the back of the net down the other end. Nearly our top goal scorer this season, keeping us in games with excellent defensive displays, and looking every inch a great captain. What should we expect to see when Thierry is back?

I am in no doubt that Thierry will still be our captain, he still is now, and I know Gilberto has too much respect to even make a fuss. But what will happen if the results dont come for us with Thierry back, then everyone will point back to the Gilberto Silva days.

I feel Thierry will still obviously be captain, but Gilberto will be MUCH more heavily involved. I have every faith Thierry will come back with a bang and our results will get even better even though we are sitting 3rd.
