The words ‘world class’ and ‘legend’ are frivolously bandied around these day without much thought to their meaning, in Dennis Bergkamp however, we have a player who is the epitome of both terms.
Bergkamp arrived in North London on the back of a fruitless and formless spell in Italy. Dennis went on to score 120 goals for the Gunners but that isn’t the sole reason for his legendary status, oh no, Bergkamp’s loyalty to Arsenal and the class he oozed both on and off the field (do you ever remember reading a Bergkamp quote in the press?) is the reason Arsenal fans go all misty eyed at the mere mention of his name.
So the juices have been set positively flowing at the thought of him returning home, which is something Bergy wouldn’t say no to.
‘I wouldn’t rule out [working at Arsenal in some capacity].
‘I really love this club and the country and I love working here. I would advise everyone to work in England, as a player or a coach, it just breathes football. It is fantastic for the game.
‘I think when I first came it was a case that [there was a lack of technical ability]. Then a lot of foreign players came in and probably improved the game.
‘Now I feel that there are foreign players who are coming in who aren’t improving the game because you’ve got English players who are technically better.
‘It has changed. If you only look at Arsenal for example, you have 16-year-olds with fantastic technique who came through the system so you must be doing something right.’
Arsene Wenger is well known for employing former players at his club, Steve Bould, Tony Adams, Martin Keown and Danny Karbassiyoon are just a couple of names to work for Arsene after retiring as a player, the addition of Bergkamp to that list would be most welcome by Arsenal fans …… wouldn’t it?
