Reports have emerged from Spain and Argentina that Arsenal have moved for South American starlets Angel Di Maria and Pedro (no, not Pedrooooooo the bus driver, from a Lee Evans sketch).

Arsenal are yet to confirm a deal for the young duo but a deal has been put in place to take them both to one of Arsenal’s feeder clubs Salamanca, as neither meet Home Office requirments for a work permit.

The Spanish second Division side had a similar deal with Arsenal last year when they took Mexican whizkid Carlos Vela on loan for a year in order for him to be eligable for a British work permit.

So, what do we know about the young duo? Well the answer is simple – very little.

Angel Di Maria, nicknamed ‘The Little Angel’ is a 19-year-old left winger, who can also play up front, currently playing for Argentina in the U-20 World Cup in Canada, scoring 3 goals in 5 games.

He plays for Argentine side Rosario Central and is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in his native land at this time. his official blog reported a couple of weeks ago that he was to sign for Arsenal, a report rubbished my many of our forum members, myself included.

Giles Grimandi, one of Arsene Wenger’s most trusted scouts, has been watching him at the Under-20 world cup and has been very impressed indeed by the youngster. The fee is reported to be around £2Million.

See a video of him on youtube here: Di Maria

Even less is known about Pedro Silva. depending on what you read he’s a striker, left winger, centre midfielder or left back. With a bit of luck, he’s all of them!

A 17-year-old Brazilian, playing for Arsenal’s latest feeder club – Fluminense. As well as not being able to get a work permit in this country, Brazilian rules dictate that he may not leave Brazil for any country other than Portugal before he turns 18.

So, to get round it The Gunners have had the youngster on trial where he got to see Arsenal’s facilities and meet his future team mates. He was unveiled as a Salamanca this week but will have to return to Brazil until October, when he will be 18. He will then spend the remainder of the season with the spanish club, before Arsene Wenger decides if the youngster should come back to Arsenal, or spend more time on loan.

N.B. I can’t find a video of Pedro Silva, so if anyone else can, please post a link. Thanks.

  • Sorry to use a pic of Wenger that looks like he’s just farted, but I haven’t seen it all before. 😀

  • Where can I find his official blog?? The only one I can find is an unofficial blog. Salamanca have confirmed the Pedro deal but not the Di Maria one.

  • I think Pedro and Di Maria are ones for next year. Maby Pedro is in 2 years time but it wouldnt surprise me is Di maria is going streight inot Arsenal. He is at the U-20’s thats why it isnt confirmed yet.

  • I’ve been watching DiMaria in the U20 tournament and the kid is very good. He scored another fantastic goal last night against Chile. I have tickets to the final against the Czechs, but DiMaria was taken off injured last night in the 51’…might not play. If these rumours are true, I think we found some more great young talent.

  • I’ve a funny feeling about the supposed Angel signing. Possible hoax #2 here.

Just because Arsenal Shorts posted a rumour (which was then picked up by Skysports and mixed in with the Pedro signing) and some Gooners have been hyping him up doesn’t necessariy mean that AW has gone and bought him.

I’ll wait until I see it in black & white on

  • Very, very impressed with Di Maria. He looks a very “intelligent” player with a great eye for a pass, as well as being able to finish. That WAS a fantastic goal. He’s not the fastest, but he looks strong. Showed some leadership qualities as well. Hope the rumours are true.

I don’t remember Vela being so one-footed at the U-17 tournament. But even though he hasn’t scored, he’s played pretty well. He hasn’t had very good service – Dos Santos looks like he wants to dribble his way through the entire opposition, for one.

  • Hope Di Maria turns out to be the next Messi, it’s said Gilles was also scouting him when he signed for Barca… If only Messi came here, RVP up front with Messi !!! It’ll kill off Man Utd, Chelski and Liverpool and all the other European teams who think they’ve got good talent in their ranks. 😀

  • If Grimandi has pulled it off again, I certainly do not want him as Director of Football, coz he is doing such a good job as scout. He was responsible for scouting Sagna as well. Both these kids come highly rated, and as a policy, this is excellent for the long term future for the club. Competition for places amongst kids, and may the best ‘man’ win.

  • prits, I think that if they were going to made him DoF it would have happened already. Like you said though, if he has such a good eye maybe he should stay our senior scout. I reckon Arsene maybe didn’t want to bring his old charge back as a DoF until the club clarifies what’s going to happen with the board etc…

  • Wenger finding a 19 year old and a 17 year old eh? …..Do I need to elaborate on that one? LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!

  • Buying the starlets and let them develop elsewhere waiting for their time is the ideal thing for the club. Well done Grimmandi
