Arsene Wenger has taken the unusual step of discussing an Arsenal signing before it has been officially announced by venerating the qualities of Southampton’s young defender Calum Chambers. Reports emerged on Friday that Arsenal had already conducted a medical and agreed terms with the 19 year old Saints man.

Chambers can play as a right back, a centre half and in central midfield and the Arsenal manager suggested his versatility was a key trait in his decision to part with more than £10m on a relatively unproven player.

In quotes carried by several of today’s papers, Wenger said, “He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions,” Wenger said.

“He hasn`t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.”

Chambers would join Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain as players the Gunners have pilfered from Southampton’s renowned academy and would represent yet another departure for the south coast club this summer, with Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Luke Shaw and manager Mauricio Pochetino having already departed.

The likely arrival of Chambers, who plays principally at right back, as well as Mathieu Debuchy, has cast doubt over the future of Carl Jenkinson, who is being heavily linked with a loan move to West Ham United.

It is expected that Chambers’ move to Arsenal will be announced officially in the next 24 hours.
