As we move closer the January transfer window the rumours of Arsenal interest in this and that player will crop up, if not grow. What actually comes of this speculation, if anything, is another matter.

Reports in the Manchester Evening News say Arsenal could get one over Manchester’s United and City as Bayern Munich’s David Alaba, of interest to these two clubs, only has eyes on one Premier League team. He would move to England if the Gunners, who he supposedly supported us as a child, wanted him.

The Austrian international does have a contract at Bayern until 2021 but is has been claimed he could leave the Germany champions if the price is right. Do Arsenal need another left back though? The 24-year-old can play in a midfield role as well.

However, any transfer would involve a significant outlay, which doesn’t always fit in with the Wenger model. Not that I’m knocking him.

Perhaps a more likely transfer could be that of Moussa Dembele from Celtic, who has gained reported admiration from Real Madrid and Barcelona too. Arsenal are interested, according to ESPN, with scouts sent to watch the 20-year-old, who would fit the mould as a Wenger-type player.

Man United are reportedly scouting the former Fulham striker also.

Wenger’s usually got his fingers on the pulse when it comes to French talent and Dembele, who left Craven Cottage for Celtic at the end of his contract last summer scoring 16 goals for the Scottish Champions so far this season, had been linked with Arsenal in the summer. He’s scored goals in the Champions League too, where his ability can be better judged in many ways.

As mentioned at the start of this if either of these, or the numerous others links we’ll see in the weeks ahead, happened is another matter. If deals were to be done the chances are it wouldn’t be in January with summer transfers suggested as the more likely option.
