Well, the do say if you want to be the best you’ve got to beat the rest! As Real Madrid are Champions League holders they would certainly fit this bill as one of the best.

Arsenal Wenger has said Arsenal would ‘relish’ a last 16 tie against the Spanish giants though. I would imagine that might not be the word some would use!

Theoretically having come through to secure a surprise Group A win ahead of Paris Saint Germain the knockout stages will supposedly bring Arsenal an ‘easier’ tie. That reward could be the likes of Madrid or Bayern Munich. Hmm, easier?

Wenger wouldn’t be drawn on his preference of sides though when this draw is made next week.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Stoke he’s quoted by arsenal.com simply as saying.

‘You look at the teams we can get, some look more prestigious, more difficult, and you would like me to say ‘I don’t want this team or that team’ but that would put us already in an inferior position if it happens.’

Should this draw pair the Gunners with Madrid the Arsenal boss doesn’t feel this limits our chances of finally managing to progress to the quarter-finals as it would be a game to embrace. He added.

‘You can take Real Madrid, one of the favourites to win the competition, even against them we will have a chance of qualifying. Another inconvenient fact for us, we have not qualified for the last six years for the quarter-finals. That will be a huge challenge for my group and they will relish that.’

Arsenal had the chance to have some control over our destiny when it came to the last 16 draw by winning the group. Having achieved that we’ve just got to wait and see what happens now.

However, if we’re honest Benfica, Bayer Leverkusen, Porto or Sevilla would be preferred to Madrid or Bayern wouldn’t they!
