Arsene Wenger has confirmed Alexis Sanchez and Shkodran Mustafi will return to first team training on Sunday.

The Arsenal duo, the final members of Wenger’s squad to return after the summer break, were given an extended period off due to their involvement in the Confederations Cup, which ended in early July when Alexis’ Chile were beaten by Mustafi’s Germany in the Russian final.

Arsenal will take on Sevilla in the Emirates Cup on Sunday but train ahead of the game with both involved, well, in training anyway.

Wenger told the Official Website: ‘Alexis and Mustafi, their first training session will be on Sunday, the day we play against Sevilla [in the Emirates Cup]. They are practising on the day.’

Obviously this game will come too soon for involvement but they’ll still have a week to prepare for the Community Shield against Chelsea and 12 days until the Premier League opener against Leicester.

Firstly, Wenger said, they’ll be assessed to see what the fitness levels are and where they are lacking.

A decision will then be made as to when they’ll be involved in the boss’ first team once again with Alexis’, on the face of it, return to come sooner.

‘First of all you make a really good check up of where they are, how much they have worked during their break. After, once you know where you stand, they need an adjusted programme and to see how quickly you can fit them in again,’ said Wenger.

Concluding: ‘Of course it depends as well on what is the need in the squad, what is their quality. All of these things together make your decision. Do you put them on the bench when they are not ready [to start]? It is easier to put a striker on the bench than a defender, sometimes. Because in a short period they can make an impact. We`ll see.’
