Could it be that after a summer of macho posturing by Arsenal and Chelsea the talks and negotiations will amount to naught?

With the closing of the transfer window imminent, Ashley Cole took to the field in a red and white shirt once more.

A strong Arsenal reserve team spanked Charlton reserves in a clash at the Underhill stadium last night in a game that saw Manu Adebayor and Jeremie Aliadiere bag a brace each, however that’s a sub point to this article.

It would seem crazy to me to risk injury upon a world class left back who is worth millions and millions of pounds if he were due to transfer to another club within the next 48 hours. If any deal were close to being done Cole would never have played for risk of him not being able to complete a medical.

Of course there are some wild conspiracy theorists out there that reckon Cole played in the reserve game last night to show the top brass at Chelsea that he is fit enough to slip straight into the side and would have no problems with a medical.

But that’s just pure nonsense, isn’t it?
