On Saturday Arsenal announced that agreement had been struck to face Chelsea in a pre season friendly at the Bird’s Nest Stadium this coming summer.

The match will take place in Beijing on Saturday July 22 at the iconic stadium and it will be the first time we have faced our London rivals outside of the United Kingdom.

The game will no doubt have an additional spark to it given how the Premier League title race this season is playing out.

It will be Arsenal’s second trip to Beijing in recent years and our third to China also, having faced Manchester City at the Bird’s Nest back in 2012 and Hangzhou Greentown in 2011.

Speaking about the return to China, manager Arsene Wenger told the Official Site.

‘The games are a key part of our preparations for the season ahead. The fact we are flying to the other side of the world is a reinforcement of our commitment to the huge, global following we enjoy. We look forward to seeing our fans in Australia and China.’

Ivan Gazidis, added.

‘Arsenal versus Chelsea matches are always very special and I am delighted that we are going to be able to give our fans in China the chance to see this game live. We have a fantastic following in China. Our matches have been the most watched Premier League games on television and our online following is among the biggest in world football. I have no doubt it will be a great game and we are all looking forward to bringing one of the big London derbies to the Bird`s Nest.’

The pre season tour sees us head to Australia to begin with where after a 10,553 mile trip we will face Sydney FC on July 13 and Western Sydney Wanderers on July 15.

5,557 miles more and we are in China for the Chelsea match and then we return to London for the Emirates Cup on July 29 and 30.

Further details will be announced as the summer nears.
