Double brace goalscorers at the weekend against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud, both found themselves coming in for praise from their colleagues after the four one victory.

Beginning with Kieran Gibbs, who came in as Nacho Monreal’s replacement following his injury, he told the Official Site that he was convinced there was still more to come from Sanchez giving his training ethic.

Opening with his thoughts about the game first, he explained.

‘It`s really tight at the moment in the league, it`s small margins. When you come to places like this it`s not easy when teams are fighting and in more a difficult position than us. It`s important to be clinical and obviously in the second half we kind of closed up nicely and it was an important win for us.’

As for Sanchez who grabbed his 50th goal, and the impact of Giroud from the substitutes bench, he went on to explain.

‘Credit to both of them in their own ways. Olivier`s just come back from injury so he`s come in and shown how important he is for the team. Alexis obviously deserves everything he gets for the work that he puts in on the pitch and every day in training. He`s a world class striker and with 50 goals for him, you feel like there`s only more to come.’

He also commented on the depth of the squad this season and the competition for places.

‘That’s obviously the difference and I feel that`s been the difference for a few years with the club. It`s about a squad game and we need to keep everyone fit, that`s the most important thing because there`s depth and quality in the squad. We need to utilise that throughout the season and make sure everyone`s ready because you can be called upon at any time.’

Francis Coquelin was also in front of the media following the game, and he was full of praise for Giroud following his frustrating period out injured with his toe problem.

‘Oli is a strong character – every time people from outside doubt him, he always responds in a good way. I am really pleased for him. He has been working really hard to get back to full fitness and it was a massive goal today to get it back to 2-1, at a very important time. It is a really strong addition to the squad and hopefully there are many more goals to come from him.’

Coquelin went on to praise the ‘strong response’ from the side following the scoreless draw with Middlesbrough in the last encounter.

‘This year we have got strong character, we have shown that in the past. I want to praise the players who came on because every time they come on they do the job. Olivier got a brace, Aaron also came on and was great as well, and the young lad Ainsley Maitland-Niles was really good. Everyone is fighting and it was a massive win. The character we are showing at the moment is great, plus the fans – home and away – have been great, so that is an extra boost for us as well.’
