Report: Arsenal could be forced to stump up £35m+ for Premier League star

|

Sheffield United are expected to demand a fee of over £35m for midfielder Sander Berge amid interest from north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

According to the Sheffield Star, there seems to be an acceptance within the club that high-profile stars could depart Bramall Lane despite the club’s desires to keep the core of the squad made up by former manager Chris Wilder.

Relegation looks a certainty for the Blades, who sit bottom of the Premier League with just under 10 games of the season remaining.

Would Sander Berge be a good signing for Arsenal?

Yes

No

Central midfield is a position that requires some of the most attention after the end of this season. The Gunners have struggled massively to contain teams with the central areas causing them the most problems.

Inconsistencies from Granit Xhaka, Dani Ceballos and Mohamed Elneny as well as lack of full fitness from Thomas Partey, who has missed large swathes of the campaign.

From a lack of goal contributions to a lack of solidity for the defence, central midfield has been a huge problem area for Mikel Arteta’s men. It was only thanks to the introduction of Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard that goals started to flow more regularly.

However, with the Englishman injury-prone and the Norwegian’s future at the club far from certain, more recruitments would suit nicely in the summer.

In Berge, the Reds would be picking up a talented all-round player, at the right end of the age spectrum and for what can be described as a nominal fee.

At 6 foot 5, the Norway international has is built similar to Partey and plays in a like-minded fashion, being able to carry the ball through the thirds with ease. And at just 23-years-old, he offers the side plenty of years of top-level performances.

With Partey having struggled for much of the campaign, his replacements have shown they aren’t up to the task of filling in for the Ghanaian. A further purchase for the centre of the park is a necessity if Arteta harbours serious hopes of rectifying the errors of this season.

In other news, Arsenal are chasing a £26m La Liga man as a potential replacement for Martin Odegaard.
