‘It is poor’: Kevin Campbell slams veteran ace for failing to ‘set the example’ last week

|

Kevin Campbell has slammed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for his antics prior to Sunday’s win over Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.

The club captain turned up late to the Stadium before the game and was subsequently dropped from the starting XI for the clash against the arch-rivals.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Highbury favourite lauded Arteta for his actions whilst slamming the Gabon international for failing to set an example.

Campbell said: “Let’s be honest, it is not good enough. It is poor. I think Mikel Arteta got it right. I think he made the correct decision, I think he got it spot on. When you are captain, and I am lucky enough to say that I can speak from experience, the onus is on you to set the example for the others. You can’t have one rule for the captain and a different rule for the rest. That does not work. He has to toe the line.”

Sunday’s antics were a far throw from what you expect from a person who is supposed to be the leader of a squad. The former Manchester City coach did superbly in sending a message to the players in his pre-match interview with Sky Sports by publically calling out the African.

However, even more, worryingly was the fact this isn’t the first time Aubameyang has carried out such actions. During his Borussia Dortmund, he missed a team briefing after a training session, causing the German club to fine him.

There were claims on Twitter that the striker was stuck in traffic at around noon on game day, but, that’s a poor excuse. In the technological era, we’re blessed with smartphones that provide traffic updates to our fingertips, allowing us to know precisely how long a single journey will take.

Timekeeping won’t be the most difficult task during your day-to-day activities as a professional footballer. How you can turn up late for one of Arsenal’s biggest games of the season proves entirely bonkers and when you’re the captain, leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

In other news, Arteta is deliberately taking his time with this ace following his lack of starts.
