Alan Shearer takes aim at Arsenal after ‘awkward’ encounter with £17m former player

|

Alan Shearer has suggested that Emiliano Martinez’s display for Aston Villa in the win over Arsenal must’ve been awkward for the Gunners.

The Argentine ‘keeper was let go by the club at the start of the season for a mere £17m after Mikel Arteta chose to keep Bernd Leno as his number one.

Speaking on the Premier League’s official website, the former Newcastle frontman lauded the shot-stopper for his display against the Gunners as he included him in his team of the week.

Shearer said: “Another clean sheet. It must have been awkward for his former club Arsenal seeing him perform so well against them.”

Was Arteta right to keep Leno as the number one keeper?

Yes

No

I must say, I’ve heard some stupid things in my time of watching football, however, Shearers comments and inclusion of the South American in his side definitely take the biscuit.

Martinez was a mere bystander as the Gunners failed to get past the Villa defence. How he made it into the team of the week despite making just three saves from Arsenal’s three shots on target is beyond me.

If anything this feels like an attempt from the division’s all-time top scorer to wind-up the Emirates Stadium faithful over the fact he was let go by the club.

In all honesty, I don’t think it will work, not after Bernd Leno’s heroics so far this campaign. The Gunners have conceded fewer goals this season despite Villa having kept more clean sheets, showing just how well the backline and the German have done.

Leno has been a fantastic player for the club throughout his career and is well-worthy of holding the number one jersey over Martinez despite his end to last year.

In other news, Kevin Campbell believes this player would’ve been subbed during the first-half under George Graham.
