These moments could cost Arsenal in the race for Champions League football – Opinion

|

Officiating in English football is a bit of a farce, isn’t it?

What happened in the clash between Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers was nothing short of abysmal as shocking refereeing decisions costing the Gunners what should’ve been three easy points.

Mikel Arteta’s men were all over the Midlands outfit like a bad rash and should’ve been at least 3-0 up in the opening 20 minutes, but bad finishing reared its ugly head. However, even after such poor finishing, the north London outfit were firmly in the driving seat after Nicolas Pepe’s opening scorcher with Wolves barely laying a glove on the side’s back four and Bernd Leno.

Should Arsenal have loaned out Reiss Nelson?

Yes

No

Craig Pawson’s decision to send off David Luiz, who was actively trying to ensure he didn’t make contact with Willian Jose turned the game on its head with Ruben Neves slotting home with ease. Joao Moutinho then struck home a stunner and there was no way back for the reds as they were left helpless.

It’s not the first time the Emirates Stadium outfit have been on the end of some poor VAR decisions this season. Sadio Mane was allowed to elbow Kieran Tierney in the face during the 3-1 loss up at Anfield earlier in the campaign.

Back in 2019, something even more sensational happened as Arsenal were denied a goal during their draw with Crystal Palace as Calum Chambers was pulled up for a foul. Footage from the game showed that it was actually the former Southampton man being fouled.

Refereeing decisions have been incredible in what is proving to be one of the most controversial footballing seasons in a long time in England. The Reds were well and truly shafted during Tuesday’s game as referees once again got a major decision wrong as the Gunners fell behind in the race for the top four.

In other news, Arsenal have been handed a boost ahead of their Europa League tie.
