‘I have cried out’: Tony Adams takes swipe at Gunners over critical issue

|

Tony Adams has taken a shot at Arsenal’s recruitment strategy after the numerous struggles over recent years in the transfer market.

Willian was signed as a free agent in the summer, however, bar the opening day of the season has struggled to make a positive impact.

Speaking on Stadium Astro, the famed Gunners captain took aim at technical director Edu over his inexperienced as he lamented the side’s approach of using agents in transfers.

Adams said: “Why have you brought him into the squad? If you have got him just to make up the numbers because he has got a bit of experience, where are you going with that?”

“I have cried out about the recruitment on more than one occasion. Edu is very inexperienced and they were heavily reliant on agents to get players into the club. All of a sudden you have got Willian, Cedric, all the same agent. We have got so many kids coming through, don’t buy these players.” (via Stadium Astro)

There are some questions marks over how the clubs transfer committee have approached the transfer market in recent years. A number of players have been brought in and performed well below-par, and when you take a look at the financial figures surrounding the deals, it begs questions over the strategy being used.

However, it seems as though the Kroenke family have done their best to clean-up the mess after they brought in Tim Lewis to do some form of investigative work at the club as he was appointed a non-executive member of the board.

It culminated in the sacking of Raul Sanllehi, who was let go by the club little over a month after the lawyer came into the club. Huss Fahmy followed suit after it was announced in October 2020 that the club’s top-contract negotiator was going to leave the club.

Whilst transfer activity was poor over the last few years, there seems to be a bit of a clean-up underway in north London. Mikel Arteta was named the manager of the club, an upgrade from his head coach role. And with former Gunner Edu the director of football, there are two footballing brains in charge of transfers, a positive move from the club.

In other news, Mikel Arteta has revealed that two players are due to begin training ahead of the Manchester United clash.
